Government Grant Scams

Most people have are no doubt aware that the Federal government makes millions of dollars available each year in the form of grants. Unfortunately there are also people who take advantage of this for their own personal gain. So how can you tell the difference between legitimate grant opportunities and government grant scams?

Firstly, it is helpful to understand exactly what a grant is. A government grant is a gift of money that is given to an individual or organization for a specific purpose and that has certain obligations attached to it. When receiving a grant you then accept and are legally bound to comply with the conditions under which it is given to you. If you do not do this, you may have to repay it or face further action.

Now a common scam is for people to receive official looking notification that they are eligible for a government grant and they simply have to claim it. There is usually no mention of what the grant must be used for or of any other obligations on their part. They are then told that they need to pay a small fee to process the application or paperwork. Unfortunately, those that fall for this scam and pay the fee never receive any money.

There are legitimate government grants that are available each and every year. They will be offered through various federal and state organizations and you will have to complete the required application process to be considered. However, there are also many government grant scams that continue to circulate as well. An easy way to find a list of actual grants that are available is to use a service such as Federal Grant Source.
